Cinderella's Older Sister, mosaic by Betsy Gallery in Santa Barbara, CA.
Cinderella's sisters are not the only women who go under the knife to be more attractive to men. My mosaic is a comment on this bloody commonality, which often actually results in disfiguration.
The transparent Italian glass smalti shoe took over a month to engineer into a high relief, using an epoxy employed by art conservationists. The background is Italian glass smalti and 24 karat gold tesserae in the heel of the shoe. The upper edge of the shoe is also 24 karat gold, left over from my days as a gilder. The frame is from my favorite source of random artifacts, tile and marble, Art from Scrap in Santa Barbara, CA, where I live and make art.
I teach at the Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art.
